Personal Essays
I’ve written essays for Southern Foodways Alliance‘s quarterly magazine Gravy, the online travel magazine CarryOn, UNC’s campus newspaper The Daily Tar Heel, and Rival magazine. My best personal essays include:
Roast Pork and Open Doors: One New Year’s Eve in Havana changed my entire perception of the island country of Cuba. Published by CarryOn magazine.
Beans and Franks for the Motherless Girl: Musings on grief, casseroles, and healing. Published in Gravy magazine.
Behind Enemy Lines: A Daily Tar Heel column on my experience tenting in Krzyzewskiville, published the day the UNC men’s basketball team played Duke University at Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2015.
A Heart Divided: My sentiments on the Duke-Carolina relationship and the often under-appreciated connection between the two schools. Published in Rival magazine.
Colors: Not an essay, but a poem. Featured on the Cowbird home page upon publication in 2014.
