A Taste of Buenos Aires

I’ve only been here a week, but I feel like I’ve been pretty well exposed to the food culture in Buenos Aires. It’s not what I expected. The guidebooks told me of a few common foods, but I’ve been surprised by how… dominant they are. If you walk down the street, you’d think all they eat here is empanadas and pizza. So much pizza. Every other restaurant is a pizza place. And every place that sells food sells empanadas– palm-sized savory stuffed pastries that are baked or fried. Common types are jamon y queso (ham and cheese), carne (beef), and pollo (chicken). They’re not spicy, because Argentinians can’t handle anything mas picante. I actually ate a couple homemade ones with my housemates the other night, and they were heavenly. Ours were caprese (tomato and mozzarella), which I haven’t seen anywhere else.

Percussion and Thieves

Whoever stole my wallet today must be extremely disappointed by what they found inside. A couple of days ago I emptied out everything I didn’t absolutely need to carry around. I took out my credit card and debit card, my student IDs, any business cards… It was nearly empty, with less than USD$15 in pesos.

Weekend Numero Uno: A Recap

Getting behind on my blog is terrible because it’s so hard to catch up without either summarizing or overloading with detail. I’ll try to stick to the highlights, with pictures to make it more interesting.

Work is Boring; Parties are Fun

I realized last night how much Argentinians mumble when they talk. I met a Guatemalan at a party, and I was shocked by how easy she was to understand. She spoke clearly! It was beautiful. And she used words I knew, and pronounced them the way I’m used to… There’s so much Argentine slang, and the castellano pronunciation throws me off every day.

Observations of the Streets

Drivers here are aggressive. There is a lot of horn-blowing, and people utterly ignore lane lines. Maybe that’s just a big-city thing, but to a country girl like me, it’s a little jarring.
